SUSTAINABILITY
RESPONSIBLE CHOICE
As the leading alcohol manufacturer in Papua New Guinea, SP Brewery aims to champion moderation and responsible choice, as part of a balanced lifestyle. We market and sell our brands responsibly and work with partners to reduce harmful drinking, such as excessive drinking, drinking and driving, drinking during pregnancy and underage drinking.
ENVIRONMENT
SP Brewery employs a sustainable mind-set in everything we do, from sourcing, producing, marketing and selling our products all the way to how they are consumed and how we can reuse and recycle waste. It ensures that our company can be a positive force for change. Brewing a Better World is in our organizational fabric. Doing the right things is good for business and pays off. It builds trust with employees, consumers, governments, regulators, and Non Government Organisations (NGOs).
EDUCATION
In 2014 SP Brewery embarked on an ambitious scholarship program with PILAG, formerly known as the Administrative College.
In 2017, the SP Brewery Foundation Inc. saw the first batch of cohorts from the public service attend a leadership and good governance scholarship training. Through this program, SPB is supporting the Government to improve its’ delivery of goods and services in PNG by enhancing its workforce.
The fundamental vision for this scholarship program includes:
- Source funding and apply such funding for a scholarship scheme for the promotion of professional standards in the PNG Public Service including:- (i) Awarding of scholarships to public servants to upgrade their academic qualifications at higher learning institutions; (ii) Provide opportunity for employees of the Public Service to attend on-the-job training or attachment with corporations both locally and abroad; (iii) To improve the quality of academic excellence and skills;
- Source funding and apply such funding for the advancement of:- (i) Research and development work on cassava as an alternative crop capable of sustaining livelihood in local communities; (ii) Create awareness on social responsible consumption of alcoholic beverages, in partnership with stakeholders; (iii) Promoting human development through sports and promote life style change, through Rugby League.
ENTERPRISE
Due to limited resources, liquor licensing and police have had a difficult time controlling re-sellers and consumers of illicit alcohol in communities. It has become evident that the prohibition of beer sales only leads to the production and consumption of the less regulated and highly health damaging substances such as home brew and marijuana.
Thus the container store initiative was established to provide accessibility to local consumers.
Around 30 to 40 container stores or taverns were set up across Papua New Guinea
• away from houses, community buildings and schools
• set up and run by local entrepreneurs, with SP Brewery’s support
Each tavern is required to operate according to strict operating hours
• 10:00am–12:00am six days a week
• Sunday 12:00pm–9:00pm
• A special tavern license is required to run this tavern
• No take-away sales is allowed
TIPS TO DRINK RESPONSIBLY
EAT UP
Don't drink on an empty stomach. Eat something preferably carbohydrates before you start drinking and snack between drinks. Eating slows alcohol absorption and gives you more energy to enjoy yourself.
WATER
Alternate your drinks with water. It helps to keep you hydrated and slow your drinking rate. Drink a glass of water before you go to sleep.
KNOW YOUR LIMIT
Daily guidelines are 3-4 units for men and 2-3 units for women. Units do not always equate to one drink – often it’s more.
THINK SMALL
Choose a smaller bottle or glass.
AVOID TOP UPS
Avoid top ups so you can keep track of your alcohol intake.
MAKE SPACE
Drinking soft drinks between drinks can help pace an evening.
BEWARE OF ROUNDS
Stay in control (and save money) by opting for smaller rounds or giving rounds a miss.
CONSIDER YOUR GENDER
If you are female, be aware that alcohol will affect you more than men because female bodies contain less water.
DESIGNATE DRIVER
Before you leave home or make sure you have money for a taxi home.
TAKE A BREAK
Give your liver a chance to rest and recuperate. And stay in tip-top condition.
